Art is a form of language--an expression that goes beyond words. To communicate I depend on documentary photographs that juxtapose with each other to create a story or mood. A woman's hand on an apple is combined with an image of a torso and a flower. The placement of the collage aims to create a new meaning. I alter the photos with colored pencil, chalk or paint to fashion an imagined landscape. Frequently I add poetic text to clarify ideas. Occasionally I will create a single photo altered in a way to heighten the effect of the image.
I was trained as a Fine Artist Painter at the University of Illinois,
and later gained a Master of Fine Arts in New Genre at the University
of Arizona. I began a professional career creating documentary movies
for PBS in 1985, first in Illinois, later in Tucson, Arizona. The
documentaries were about environmental issues or culture and art.
Following a car accident I have concentrated on making art and writing
poetry, although I plan to return to documentaries sometime in the
future.
